Types of Lymphoma

There are two different types of lymphoma: Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (HL) and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL). The causes and symptoms of each type vary, along with the treatment method. In this article, we’ll take a look at the different types of lymphoma, along with their sub-types:

NHL
It is relatively more prevalent than HL, and a few types included in this category are:

  • B-Cell NHL
It is an aggressive and commonly diagnosed variant of NHL. It can be resolved with treatment, but it can be life-threatening if left untreated.
  • T-Cell NHL
It isn’t as prevalent as B-cell lymphoma, and only 15% of all non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases are this type.
  • Follicular NHL
Approximately 20% of people in the country diagnosed with lymphoma have follicular NHL. It originates in the White Blood Cells (WBCs) and is more prevalent among people of old age.
  • Burkitt’s NHL
This is a rare variant of NHL that is aggressive and is prevalent among individuals with a weak immune system.
  • Mantle Cell NHL
Another aggressive variant of NHL, studies prove that of all the detected cases of lymphoma, only 6 percent cases are of Mantle Cell NHL. It predominantly originates in the bone marrow or gastrointestinal tract and is usually diagnosed in the later stages.
  • Small lymphatic NHL
It develops gradually, and the cancerous cells under this type of lymphoma are present in the lymph nodes.
  • Primary Mediastinal B-cell NHL
It is a subtype of B-cell NHL and is common among women between the ages of 20 and 30 years.
  • Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma
Not a common type of lymphoma, this accounts for 1-2% of the total lymphoma cases and mostly affects older adults.

HL
Among the different types of lymphoma, the second variant is Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It originates in the Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells, which are the cells of the immune system or the B-cells. The primary types of HL are:

  • Lymphocyte-rich HL
It is a prevalent type of lymphoma that predominantly affects men. Approximately 5% of the total HL cases are of this type.
  • Lymphocyte-depleted HL
An aggressive but rare type of HL, it affects only 1% of people with lymphoma. People in their 30s are at a higher risk of developing this disease.
  • Mixed cellularity HL
It affects both RS and lymphocyte cells and is a common variant of HL. Approximately 25% of people with HL have this lymphoma.
  • Nodular lymphocyte-predominant HL
Approximately 5% of all lymphoma cases are of this type, and it is primarily characterized by the absence of RS cells. People who are 30-50 years old are at high risk of developing this type of lymphoma.
  • Nodular sclerosis HL
It is the most commonly diagnosed type of lymphoma and affects 70 percent of all people with HL. This lymphoma is far more prevalent in younger adults than in others.
